February Recap: Guest Speaker Rebecca Drobis

Our guest photographer and judge was Rebecca Drobis. Rebecca, a commercial photographer and a born-and-bred Washingtonian presented her work that focuses on the following thematic areas: health, education, kids/young adults, family and portraits. She  showed a special video entitled “The Ice Cream Man” shot while doing a photo project on the Montana’s Blackfeet Reservation. Rebecca first travelled there at the invitation of a friend who grew up nearby. That trip turned into a multi-year, multi-media art project that documents  – from one year to the next  – the life of the Blackfeet Reservation community of 7,000 residents with a staggering 69% unemployment rate. January Recap: Guest Speaker Ron Aira

Ron presented his Matador photographs in video format (https://vimeo.com/199953980). Recording videos is a growing trend among commercial photographers who use them to showcase their work to potential clients. Ron also spoke about the types of images that usually catch his attention (including in judging) – something: i) not done/seen before; ii) risky and/or “weird”; and iii) emotionally charged and/or evocative. Please see some of Ron’s favorite photographers/resources at these links: http://www.geofkern.com http://www.americansuburbx.com/photography

December Recap: Guest Speaker Richard Batch

Our guest photographer and judge was Richard Batch. Richard presented images from his 30+ years of photography, most of which happened in and around DC. Richard talked about the importance of patience in photography and what Henri Cartier-Bresson called “The Decisive Moment”. Apparently, back in the day, if you wondered the streets of DC long enough and were quick on your feet, you could end up with a shot of Jacqueline Kennedy on your Leica or Hasselblad! To summarize Richard’s presentation, in order for us to capture something special, we need to have: Intuition to recognize the potential for a great moment in our surroundings, Patience to see that moment…

An Interview with IPS member Peter Allum

Peter Allum is Assistant Director at the IMF. He joined the IPS in 2015 and has delivered strong visual images in many of the monthly competitions. What’s the secret behind his great photos? Here’s a brief interview. Qn: When did you discover your passion for photography? Ans: I caught the photography bug only recently. I’ve always had an interest in the visual arts, and loved seeing photography in museums and galleries. When my son signed up for a school photography class a couple of years ago, it sparked an interest. I bought a mid-70s Canon F1 and started to shoot, sometimes with him. There’s something very appealing about working with…
