2018 Annual Exhibition Winners
1st“Irony” by Marta Gonzalez
This is a powerful and skillfully-balanced composition that juxtaposes a dynamic work of art with a living being confined to stasis, reflecting the terrible consequences of war. The print itself captures every tonal range; and the elements, including the horizontal line in the center, the perfectly-framed man, and the geometry of the steps, coalesce to make the aesthetics of this photograph as compelling as its statement.
“Nigerien Laundry Site” by Dorte Verner
This is an exquisite composition that nicely applies the rule of thirds to two groups of workers. The workers on the right are neatly framed by the pole and right edge, while the workers on the left create a trio with the left pot. The yellow fabric, perfectly centered in the left frame, boldly gives energy to the entire image. We see people working hard and yet presented aesthetically, creating a fine tension to this piece.
“Girl and her toy” by Dorte Verner
The child with dusty feet has fashioned a toy from corn cobs, a plastic bottle, and a string. You may walk by the monochromatic tones, but the content will stop you.
